What We Use
Titanium Dioxide
A widely used ingredient in many mineral makeup formulas due to its brightness and highly reflective nature. It also provides great coverage, great adhesion (which helps the minerals stay when you put them on) and helps protect skin by intercepting UV light. It is also naturally soothing to the skin.
Zinc Oxide
Another widely used ingredient, zinc oxide offers natural UV protection. It also provides great coverage, and as an added bonus, it is also anti-inflammatory, soothes irritated skin and rosacea. Very absorbent.
Magnesium Stearate
While it provides only average coverage, magnesium stearate provides excellent adhesion. Amounts of this ingredient are generally fairly small, because a little goes a long way!
Kaolin
While kaolin gives average coverage, it is highly absorbent, has good adhesion and reduces shine.
Sericite Mica
A low luster mica, sericite is commonly used in foundations and eyeshadows because it reflects light and reduces the appearance of enlarged pores and fine lines. It is a good substitute for bismuth oxychloride.
Rice Powder
While not an actual mineral, rice powder is an awesome alternative to cornstarch. It is soothing and emollient, absorbs oil well, is translucent and gives a porcelain shine-free finish. For centuries, Asian women have used rice powder in their makeup and it is also used in the ancient art of Ayurveda. Since rice powder is not an actual mineral, it is important to keep mineral makeup containing this ingredient in a dry, air tight container out of sunlight. This will prolong the shelf life of your minerals.
Silica
Silica is highly absorbent and great for oil control in foundations. It has light scattering properties that help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Silk
Silk is a natural moisture adjusting product which can absorb or release moisture as temperature or humidity changes throughout the day. It is also a great oil control ingredient. It “breathes” and allows skin to breathe as well. It both reflects and absorbs UV rays and contains 18 separate amino acids which are easily absorbed into the skin. Itadds a sheen to your makeup products as the light is reflected.
Pearl
Pearl is not added to give a pearlescent sheen to your makeup, as it gives off no sheen. Pearl powder is an ingredient that has been used for thousands of years in Asia, as it has amino acids, calcium and protein. It is believed be good for bone development and help promote healthy luminous skin, although neither of those statements have been proven by the FDA.
Boron Nitride
Boron Nitride is a natural inert mineral that is added to foundations and other mineral formulations to improve slip and adhesion. It provides an amazing finish to your mineral foundation.
Allantoin
While allantoin is not an actual mineral, it is derived from the comfrey plant, so it is still a natural ingredient. One of the main benefits of allantoin is that it stimulates new and healthy tissue growth, plus soothes the skin. This ingredient is currently only used in our powdered primer.
What We Don’t Use
Below you will find a list of ingredients commonly found in mineral makeup formulations, along with the reasons why you won’t find them in your Mineralicious Makeup!
Bismuth Oxychloride
Found in many of the major mineral makeup brands, bismuth oxychloride is highly refractive, translucent, gives smooth even application with good adhesion. Plus, it’s cheap…which is good for the manufacturer utilizing it. However, it can be very irritating to the skin, causing breakouts, itching, allergic reactions. For people, like me, with rosacea and or acne, it can further irritate and aggravate those conditions.
So while bismuth oxychloride may have its redeeming properties, I choose not to use it in my formulations. Many women switch to minerals because they are reacting to traditional commercial chemical laden makeup and frequently are disappointed when their bismuth oxychloride containing product makes matters worse. If you’ve had an adverse reaction to other mineral makeup brands before…check the ingredients…bismuth oxychloride may very well be the culprit!
Talc
Talc is actually a mineral! It absorbs moisture and oil, helps skin feel softer, cooler and drier. It also has good adhesion and is light weight. All good traits for a mineral makeup ingredient. However there is so much controversy surrounding talc and cancer that I just do not feel comfortable selling a product that includes this ingredient.
Cornstarch
Cornstarch is very translucent, is absorbent and lightweight (plus it makes good gravy! LOL). It is commonly used as a talc substitute. It is, however, a veggie based material and there is a higher risk of bacterial growth in products containing cornstarch. I personally tried this in a foundation formula before I found my current formulation and hated the way it felt.
Carmine
Carmine is a beautiful bright red pigment. It is an FDA approved dye for food and is found in many foods that are red, pink and purple. In makeup, it is very often found in lipsticks, blushes and some eyeshadows. You can also find it in colored pencils (they are generally marked “carmine” for the color). It is a natural product, however it is not a mineral and definitely not vegan. And even though it is virtually impossible to get that brilliant red hue (barring artificial colorants), I will not use it simply because it is derived from insects. Yes, bugs. Plus it has also been known to cause severe allergic reactions when used as a food dye.
